PSV-A-4 Novel Method to Identify Cattle Predisposed to Severe Cases of Bovine Respiratory Disease

چکیده

Abstract Respiratory disease in several species can range from subclinical infection to acute death. Bovine respiratory (BRD) remains the greatest economic challenge facing beef industry. Histones are core proteins chromosomal structure that, when released extracellularly, cytotoxic and could contribute exacerbated tissue necrosis during infection. Work our laboratory demonstrated cattle suffering severe cases of BRD had limited capacity protect against effects extracellular histones, however, protective mechanism(s) remain unknown. Literature suggests components complement system interact with but on activity histones is unclear. The objective current experiment was evaluate feedlot heifers subsequent outcomes. Serum samples were collected 118 heifer calves (BW 229 ± 2.4 kg) at arrival evaluated for histone toxicity employing an assay; using a 50% hemolytic screening assay. Animals retrospectively assigned groups consisting of: not requiring treatment antibiotics (NT; n = 80) or that died within 1 wk entering (DA; 9). DA animals less (P < 0.001) than NT toxicity. Complement reduced 0.05) compared animals. Using ratio both assays under stringent selection points, positive predictive value 75%, negative 94%. Results indicate predisposed have impaired presumably contributing Analyzing these functional pathways may provide novel tool BRD.

Comparison of a Remote Early Disease Identification (REDI) System to Visual Observations to Identify Cattle with Bovine Respiratory Diseases

ABSTRACT Background Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most common disease in the beef industry, and diagnosis based on visual observation of clinical signs is challenging. Cattle may alter behavior when diseased and technology exists to remotely monitor these behavioral changes. The objective of this study was a preliminary assessment of the ability of a remote early disease identificatio...

Agreement Among 4 Sampling Methods to Identify Respiratory Pathogens in Dairy Calves with Acute Bovine Respiratory Disease

BACKGROUND Four sampling techniques commonly are used for antemortem identification of pathogens from cattle with bovine respiratory disease (BRD): the nasal swab (NS), guarded nasopharyngeal swab (NPS), bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and transtracheal wash (TTW). Agreement among these methods has not been well characterized. OBJECTIVE To evaluate agreement among TTW and NS, NPS, or BAL for id...

Genetic approaches to identify genomic regions associated with decreased susceptibility to bovine respiratory disease complex

One approach to reducing losses from BRDC is the implementation of selection of cattle that are less likely to be affected by disease by the use of dairy predicted transmitting ability (PTA) or beef expected progeny differences (EPD) for susceptibility to BRDC. The PTAs or EPDs would be based on genotypes associated with animals less susceptible to disease and incorporated into commercial genot...
